Description
Alex, a socially isolated boy who recently lost his father in a fire, reluctantly attends a summer camp in Southern California called "Rim of the World". He meets two other "misfits" - Zhen Zhen, originally a mute, charming orphan girl from China, and Dariush, an outspoken boy from a wealthy family. One evening, while waiting to go canoeing on a lake, Zhen Zhen wanders into the forest and tries to follow Alex, looking for the observation point she saw on a camp poster. He meets Dariush nearby, answering nature's call. Dariush mistakenly tries to 'cure' Alex's fear of heights by planting him next to a cliff edge, and Gabriel, a boy they haven't seen before at camp, intervenes. Hearing the commotion, Zhen Zhen comes back downstairs and meets the boys. at that time,
While hurrying back, they find that other campers have left the lake, and they see alien ships invading the valley. The kids return to camp and later find the camp empty of people - everyone except Conrad, a camp counselor. Suddenly, a Dragon spaceship fleeing the International Space Station comes fiercely close. The dying astronaut in the spacecraft gives Alex a key, with instructions to take it to NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) facility in Pasadena, the only way to destroy the aliens. An alien appears with his "dog" and kills the astronaut. Alex and his friends try to hide and Konrad is killed, but the kids manage to evade the aliens and escape the camp.
They go to the sheriff's office and find Lou, a prisoner left in the cells. Lou claims he has a son waiting for him, so a sensitive Alex decides to free him before the team heads to JPL. Later, the group encounters marines evacuating civilians. The commander gratefully takes the key and puts the kids on a bus to safety. However, alien ships attack the convoy and the soldiers die, whereupon Alex retrieves the key from the dying commander and the team departs for JPL once again. At night, after briefly taking refuge at Gabriel's old house, Gabriel explains that he was an escapee from Juvi and was deposited at his mother's store due to a misunderstanding, where a customer assumed Gabriel was trying to steal his merchandise. deposit box, Not knowing about Gabriel's dyscalculia. Shortly after, they are attacked by a gang of masked men led by Lou, who trick the group into releasing him as a murderous thief. He agrees to let the kids go, but only if Alex gives him the key, which Lou thinks can be sold on the black market. Alex refuses and Lou tries to kill Alex with a knife, but before Lou can hit him, the camp alien arrives and attacks them all. While they are walking in the forest, Dariush and Gabriel fight and Dariush reveals that his father lost their car dealership, which means he will go to jail, hence the reason Dariush was put in the camp. Suddenly, their transmitter received an SOS from JPL's doctor instructing them to give them the key, encouraging them to continue their journey. Children go to a shopping mall and change clothes. Afterwards, the group takes the Ford Mustang to the parking lot, which they find Shen Shen can drive, and quickly make their way the rest of the way to JPL, but are attacked by the alien who is chasing them. While trying to escape the alien they abandon the vehicle and realize that the key is left in the car. Dariush tries to go it alone to get the key, getting injured by an alien in the process. But manages to escape with the key. The team eventually make it to the JPL facility, but find the doctor dead and his SOS message on his transmitter only the result of his blood leaking out. The kids manage to make radio contact with a general at NORAD, who explains that the key holds information that can be used to destroy the alien mothership in orbit through a Cold War defense project called Excalibur. Jen Zen goes into the basement to activate the emergency generators, where she is attacked by an alien dog, and Alex goes to the roof to reset the communication dish, where he is attacked by the alien. Zhen Zhen manages to lock the dog in the basement and returns to the command room to help Gabriel and an injured Darius insert the keys that launch the Excalibur weapon.
